UGC-NET (National Eligibility Test)

  • UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ & admission to Ph.D. in Indian universities and colleges.
  • Awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship depending on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and Paper-II of UGC-NET

Pattern of Examination :

  • The Test will consist of two papers. Both papers will consist of objective-type, multiple-choice questions. There will be no break between papers.
  • Each question carries 02 (two) marks. For each correct response, the candidate will get 02 (two) marks.
  • There is no negative marking for an incorrect response.

Joint CSIR-UGC NET

  • Joint CSIR UGC NET is a test being conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor, and admission to Ph.D. in Indian universities and colleges subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria laid down by UGC.

Pattern of Examination

  • CSIR-UGC (NET) Exam will consist of three parts. All the parts will consist of objective-type, multiple-choice questions. There will be no break between papers.
  • Part 'A' shall be common to all subjects containing questions of General Aptitude. The candidates must answer any 15 questions of two marks each. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 30 out of 200.
  • Part 'B' shall contain subject-related conventional MCQs. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 70 out of 200. The maximum number of questions to be attempted shall be in the range of 20-35.
  • Part 'C' shall contain higher-value questions that may test the candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. The questions shall be analytical where a candidate is expected to apply the scientific knowledge to solve the given scientific problem. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 100 out of 200.

1. Eligibility Criteria for UGC/CSIR NET

  • For Assistant Professor: Candidates should have a master's degree or equivalent from universities/institutions recognized by UGC.
  • For Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor:
    Candidates should have a master's degree with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for OBC/SC/ST/PwD/transgender candidates).

2. Mode & Time of Exam for UGC/CSIR NET

  • UGC/CSIR NET is conducted twice every year (June & December)
  • The Examination is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only.

3. Age Limit & Relaxation for UGC/CSIR NET

  • JRF: The upper age limit is 30 years as of the exam date (relaxation of 5 years for Women & OBC/SC/ST/PwD/transgender candidates).
  • Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for UGC/CSIR NET as an Assistant Professor.

4. Application Process for UGC/CSIR NET

  • The application process is online through the official NTA website.
  • UGC-NET - https://ugcnet.nta.ac.in
  • Joint CSIR-UGC NET - https://csirnet.nta.ac.in
  • Candidates need to register, fill in the application form, upload scanned documents, and pay the application fee.

5. Admit Card:

  • Admit cards are available for download from the official website a few weeks before the exam date. Candidates need to bring the admit card and a valid photo ID to the exam center.

The results committee will decide the number of candidates who will be qualified for JRF-NET, Assistant Professor and ‘admission to the Ph.D. only’.

7. Validity of certificate UGC/CSIR NET

  • The eligibility certificate for Assistant Professor is valid for a lifetime.
  • The validity of JRF award is three years, with the option to extend it further upon fulfilling certain criteria.
  • For admission to Ph.D., the marks obtained in the UGC/CSIR NET will be valid for one year from the date of declaration of the result of the UGC/CSIR NET Exam.

8. Results for UGC/CSIR NET

  • The result is usually announced a few weeks after the exam on the official website. Candidates can check their results using their roll number and date of birth.

9. Syllabus for UGC NET

  • The syllabus for Paper I includes topics like teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, mathematical reasoning, and general awareness.
  • The syllabus for Paper II varies depending on the subject chosen by the candidate. Candidates should refer to the official UGC NET website for a detailed syllabus of each subject.
